Raise the Standard, Go Beyond Expectations, Find the Balance

I became a case manager because I honestly believed I could positively impact the lives of the people I served. When I first started out in case management, the focus was all about the needs of the case manager and the people we serve.

Over time, there has been a major shift, and so much of case management is focused on the
business of case management and the return on investment (ROI). I

Engage Case Management: Raise the Standard, Go Beyond Expectations, Find the Balance
They settle for the status quo, versus advocating for evidenced-based best practices and what makes sense. We need case managers who incorporate Standards of Practice into their daily practice. We need to strive to raise
the standards of case management by breaking down the existing silos and developing multidisciplinary workgroups to promote change. We need to tell our stories so people don't forget
hear more about the business, and less and less about the people we serve; and I feel there is a need to find the balance between both the art and the science of case management. We need to be able to talk about the business impact of a professional case management program, but we also need to be able to tell the human stories of the impact case management has on returning people to their maximum level of function.

So much of case management is built on trust. The trust the client has that the case manager will do their best to meet the needs of the client. The trust the payer has that the case manager will advocate for their clients while being cognizant of the costs of inefficient care.

All too often people settle. They settle for what they must do, versus what they might do, to go beyond expectations.
the human impact when focusing just on the dollars. Finally, we need to remember to take the time to take care of ourselves. All too often we are so busy taking care of everyone else that we don't leave time to take care of our own needs. Too many case managers are burning out, and we need to do a better job of taking care of our own needs so we are in a position to better serve our clients.

The challenges of healthcare delivery ensure a fast-paced, stressful environment. It is easy to get lost in the minutia and overwhelmed by the day-to-day. What can we do to be fired up and not burned out? This presentation will highlight things that case managers have to get excited about, and how to survive the current realities.
