Hussein A. Tahan, DNSc, RN, CNA, is currently the Executive Director–International Health Services at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. In this position, Hussein is responsible for the management and provision of international consulting services to other healthcare organizations in the areas of hospital operations, quality/patient safety, healthcare delivery systems; and to assist organizations in meeting or exceeding international accreditation standards. Hussein is trained in the Six Sigma Performance Improvement Methodology; and has facilitated and led numerous performance improvement teams, resulting in measurable benefits such as reduction in hospital length of stay, improvement in patient and family satisfaction/customer loyalty, cost reduction, and accreditation.
Hussein has 20 years of healthcare experience. He has assumed leadership positions of varied hospital departments including cardiovascular services, emergency department, critical care, interventional cardiology, intervention radiology, and case management. He has worked in a variety of settings including academic and community, as well as not-for-profit hospitals ranging in size from 250 to over 2,000 beds. He consulted with numerous hospitals in redesigning their patient care delivery systems or to develop new programs/services.
Hussein's research has been in the field of case management and care coordination, mainly in the areas of service delivery and the roles and functions of case managers. His doctoral dissertation resulted in the development of a substantive theory in acute care case management delivery entitled: “Provision of Integrated Care Using a Collaborative Core Team.” Over the past decade, Hussein has shared his expertise in case management and patient care delivery systems’ redesign with numerous organizations throughout the U.S., and as an invited speaker at regional and national conferences.
He has published more than 75 articles and book chapters; and is currently a member of the editorial advisory boards of three journals: Professional Case Management; JONA Healthcare Law, Ethics, and Regulations; and Men in Nursing. He also is a manuscript reviewer for four other journals. Additionally, Hussein is the co-author of an American Journal of Nursing Award Winning Book entitled: “The Case Manager’s Survival Guide: Winning Strategies for Clinical Practice,” and co-editor of the second edition of the CMSA Core Curriculum for Case Management.
Hussein has participated on national task forces including CMSA’s National Transitions of Care Coalition (NTOCC) - measurement subgroup-, Care Coordination Technical Advisory Board of the National Quality Forum, the Task Force on Nursing Competence of the National Council of the State Boards of Nursing, and the Cultural Diversity Council of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Hussein is also a past Commissioner (Chair of the Commission for Case Manager Certification). In addition, he is an advisory board member of the Graduate Nursing program at Saint Peter’s College, NJ; and PCI Home Care Agency, NY.
He earned his Doctorate Degree in Nursing Science at Columbia University, in New York City; his Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration at College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, NY; and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He is certified in Nursing Administration by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Hussein holds adjunct faculty positions at St Peter’s College in NJ; Pace University in New York City; and the American University of Beirut, in Lebanon, where he teaches graduate courses in nursing administration, quality/performance improvement, and case management.
