Kathy Craig, MS, RN, CCM, CRA, originated the Case Management Acuity Tool©, Caseload Matrix©, and AccuDiff©, and their upgrades. In 2007, with Dr. Diane Huber, Ms. Craig co-authored the peer-reviewed articles Acuity and Case Management: A Healthy Dose of Outcomes (I, II, and III), published in Professional Case Management and co- presented this topic at CMSA Symposium. The pioneering work and publications have placed her at the forefront of evidence-based quality, performance, and outcomes analysis for case acuity, caseload acuity, and case management (CM) outcomes related to acuity.

Besides practicing CM in the 1000 Islands area of Canada, she runs Craig Research Continuum for personalized health research for individuals, client consultations for acuity adapting and implementing, and primary research and tool development for business applications. Ms. Craig has edited health technology monographs for the Ontario Ministry of Health and reviewed meta-analyses for the world’s premier evidence-based health information network, The Cochrane Collaboration. She serves on the CMSA Editorial Board, CMSA Academic (Research) Community of Practice co-chair, CMSA Case Load Calculator Work Group, National Case Management Network of Canada Board, Canadian Hearing Society Community Development Board, and Business & Professional Women-Kingston President.

From 1992-2001, Ms. Craig worked as a telephonic case manager (in both psychiatric and medical CM), physician liaison, and analyst for 3 major products—CM, 24-hour nurse access lines, and experimental technologies. As lead analyst in a CM company’s guideline and outcomes unit, she followed rigorous protocols and endured numerous critiques to research, write, and produce evidence-based practice guidelines for nationwide use in the U.S. Ms. Craig practiced frontline nursing for 15 years across the U.S. in large metropolitan facilities (e.g., George Washington University Hospital ICU, Washington, DC), small rural hospitals (e.g., an 18-bed facility a mile from the Texas-Mexican border), and open and locked psychiatric institutions (e.g., Boulder Psychiatric Hospital, Boulder, CO). Her nursing glory days involved the 2-year interval when she camped her way across the U.S. going from one travel nurse contract assignment to another.

Ms. Craig holds degrees in Biomedical Writing (MS, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia), Biology (baccalaureate, University of Delaware), and Nursing (associate degree, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC)). She was awarded the first full sponsorship by the State of North Carolina to attend the CPCC program. She acquired computer programming, clinical research associate, and case management certifications, worked for newspapers and professional journals, and contributed to texts such as Nursing TimeSavers as clinical editor at Springhouse. Journal articles she wrote on the Re-use of Single Use Devices received commendation from the FDA. For 2008, Ms. Craig has committed to contribute the chapter on acuity to the 4th edition of Dr. Huber’s essential and foundational text, Leadership and Nursing Care Management.
