Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a chronic, idiopathic, sensory disorder referring to symptoms of spontaneous, continuous leg movements associated with unpleasant paresthesia, causing an almost irresistible urge to move the legs occurring at rest. This interferes with sleep, resulting in chronic sleep deprivation, daytime fatigue, stress, and mood disorders. Disorders associated with RLS include depressed mood, hypertension, and heart disease. These disorders significantly increase the burden of the disease while impacting the quality of life for the person/family.
Many case managers have become involved with RLS as it arise in the management of patients in other disease states. This activity will bridge the gap in knowledge as to what RLS is, why it happens, how to assess for it, and how to manage it.
Objectives:
1. Identify diagnostic and guidelinescriteria for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), including the IRLS Study Group.
2. Outline short- and long-term management strategies to improve productivity, control comorbidities, and enhance quality of lilfe for persons with RLS.
3. Integrate management of RLS into the case management processes. |
