The Global War on Terror has brought increasing attention to the need for a cross-functional approach to match patient needs with services in this expanding, loosely organized continuum. The sheer magnitude and diversity of the military healthcare system demands an understanding of the roles of the numerous program liaisons (Army, Air Force, and Navy Military Treatment Facilities, Veteran Affairs Medical Facilities, Managed Care Support Contractors, Military Medical Support Office, Wounded Warrior program, MEB/PEB, etc). Case management has been recognized as a necessary link in the chain that can hold together the military healthcare system by utilizing these entities and how they can address the varied needs of the active duty population, regardless of healthcare environment or resource availability. As a result, case management interventions, integration, patient care coordination, and continuum of care can enhance the overall quality of healthcare.

This 1-1/2 day workshop will address case management policy and program changes across the enterprise, medical-legal aspects of case management documentation, ethical considerations in the military patient population, overcoming the unique challenges in delivery of behavioral health services, the MEB/PEB process, and  the roles of the various program liaisons in accessing and maximizing benefits for MHS beneficiaries.

This session is only open to active military or VA members.  IDs will be required for admittance.

This session does not represent the official viewpoints of the DoD or any Military Service Department.

Objectives:
  1. Describe the multiple interacting systems that may provide care to any MHS/VA beneficiary.

  2. Discuss critical communication elements in military/VA case management and how to diminish clinical risk to the beneficiary and ethical and legal risk to the care team and the care delivery system.

  3. Describe the case manager’s personal role in providing seamless care to all MHS/VA beneficiaries with any condition.

  4. Define the WTU structure, target population, and special patient’s needs -- how care is facilitated through the three services and VA.
