To advance the practice of case management, two things are needed: a body of knowledge that demonstrates its value and the ability of those in the practice to clearly articulate their success stories. Knowledge and success reflect how case managers make a difference in the lives of patients, healthcare professionals, employers, and consumers.

The Editors of the Case Management Society of America’s official publications (Professional Case Management journal and Case in Point magazine) offer you an exciting, interactive workshop that provides key tools you can use to shake the jitters of writing for publication. The workshop will provide practical tips that will empower you to clearly communicate your ideas, best practices, and research in both academic journals and contemporary magazines. The workshop will be broken down into two sections:

Contemporary Writing: This section will provide tips for telling your story in magazines, such as Case in Point, AARP, Business Week, Psychology Today, and other forms of media. You will learn how to take your practical experience and develop interesting stories in clear and concise messages. You will discover how to select captivating topics, narrow the focus for a meaty presentation, write conversationally, source properly, and  understand what to expect when submitting your work for publication. We’ll teach you how the publication process works, and what it takes to get your message published. The workshop will be dynamic and interactive with opportunities for you to put into practice what you’ve learned. -- Presented by Katherine Johnson, Freelance Writer/Media Consultant

Scholarly Writing: Don’t let this scare you! This section is designed to foster the skills of novice writers, and simplify the manuscript development and submission process. It will primarily focus on the essentials of writing for an academic journal such as Professional Case Management, Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, Social Work Research, Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA), and other peer-reviewed publications.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to communicate research studies, best practices, and industry benchmarks for the practical use of the case manager and for the advancement of the profession. Contributing to your professional publication is essential to communicate knowledge, share expertise, inform others of the latest innovations in practice, and disseminate the findings of research. Yes, this is hard work and can be intimidating! This workshop, however, makes the process simple, manageable, and rewarding.  In this section, you’ll learn how to develop an original idea into a publishable paper, plan and organize your work, find your “style” of writing and capitalize on your strengths. -- Presented by Hussein Tahan, DNSc, RN, CNA, Editorial Board Member, Professional Case Management

Goal: As a participant, you will leave the 4-hour workshop with a renewed sense of empowerment to tell your story and share your successes!
