Communicating Across Boundaries addresses the theme of Cultural Competency in Case Management by addressing Beliefs and Barriers as well as CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards) as recommended by the Office of Minority Health.
Participants will leave with a greater understanding of general beliefs and barriers including general beliefs on self concept, filial piety, family, gender roles, social interactions, western medicine and causes of illness and how those beliefs affect an individual and communities receipt of healthcare. Participants will also have a better understanding of institutional, community and provider level barriers to receiving care.
The 14 CLAS recommendations will be addressed in a creative participatory manner and discussed with regard to case management.
Participants will leave with tools to assist them in working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures with the goal of negotiating a successful interaction around health care.
Objectives:
- Identify health attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that may be present in minority communities and differ from the dominant culture.
- Identify the key barriers that may prevent minority communities from accessing healthcare.
- State three CLAS standards, and state their relevance to practicing Case Management.
