Date: Thursday, June 19, 2008
Time: 03:45 PM - 05:15 PM
Type: CONCURRENT
Level: INTERMEDIATE
Track: Tools & Techniques
Sponsor(s): Snap for Seniors
Speaker(s): Eve M. Stern

Case managers today have a variety of tools at their disposal which allow them to easily access and keep track of the vast quantities of information necessary to effectively serve their clients. Whether aimed at peer reviewed literature on disease treatments, listing housing with care options, or dealing with anything else a case manager must consider, databases and other decision support tools have aggregated vital information that was once scattered and hard to find. All of these tools are not equal however, as many have entered this space only as a way to attract users for other monetary purposes. This presentation will cover the essential knowledge necessary to evaluate the quality of such tools, so case managers can make sure that they are getting the best information and services available, and will provide examples demonstrating how a high-quality tool should function. Learning objectives include:

1.  What the essential building blocks are for quality databases.
2.  Review of ideal features and functions to exploit access to data.
3.  What criteria to use when evaluating databases.
4.  How has technology has impacted decision support tools for consumers and case manager interactions?
5.  Service level expectations for decision support and database solutions.
6   Review of key metrics to measure the effectiveness of decision support tools and databases.

Objectives:
  1. Outline the essential building blocks of a quality decision support tool.

  2. Review the criteria to use while evaluating a database with search tools.

  3. Review service level expectations for DSS (decision support services).
