Case Managers are constantly asked, “What is the value of case management? This presentation answers this question through case benefit analysis for a proposed psychiatric case management program at Kenner Army Health Clinic (KAHC) Community Mental Health Clinic (CMHC) for Advanced Individual Training (AIT) soldiers who are high risk for psychiatric admission. In this proposal, the objective function of the psychiatric nurse case manager (NCM) program is to reduce healthcare costs by providing earlier identification, earlier intervention, and continuity of care utilizing the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Case Management Model. The psychiatric NCM, through the use of the ACT case management model can reduce the total number of hospitalizations and bed days annually, reduce the outpatient no shows and total number of KAHC CMHC walk-in visits, increase the number of days the AIT soldier attends class, improve staff, soldier and unit satisfaction with overall health care.
Using military data, and current literature with N=90, this analysis revealed a net benefit of $263,735 and a cost benefit ratio of 4.4. If $263,735 can be saved for every 90 AIT soldiers at high risk for psychiatric admission, then the funding of a psychiatric NCM is an extremely reasonable program to implement.

- List at least three characteristics associated with high-risk psychiatric admission based on literature review.
- Recognize the impact a psychiatric NCM program can have on healthcare costs, utilization of mental health services, and customer satisfaction.
