CMSA's Letter to FDA Regarding Bevacizumab

Read CMSA's September 14, 2010 letter to the Food and Drug administration (FDA) in which it implores the FDA to give due consideration to the issue of patient and provider choice as it considers elimination of the indication for use of bevacizumab in the treatment of patients with metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer.

Metastatic breast cancer is an incurable disease that takes the lives of approximately 40,000 women in the United States each year. The decision to remove the indication for this use of bevacizumab effectively eliminates one of the few remaining available treatment options for patients in this dire situation.

CMSA's Letter to NAIC Regarding Medical Loss Ratios

Read CMSA's May 5, 2010 letter to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) requesting that case management be classified as clinical expenses in the medical loss ratio (MLR).

CMSA urges the NAIC to support the classification of these services as either “medical expenses” or “quality improvement expenses” for the purpose of calculating a health plan’s MLR under the requirements of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), PL 111-148

7 Strategies for Effective Care Transitions

From the keynote address by CMSA's Executive Director, Cheri Lattimer, while at the World Congress Leadership Summit.

With providers across the country experimenting with transitional care improvements, many models that are spearheading the movement share some common interventions, said Cheri Lattimer, executive director for the non-profit National Transitions of Care Coalition, in a keynote address at Friday's World Congress 3rd Annual Leadership Summit on Hospital Readmissions.

Lattimer outlined several models at the Falls Church, Va., event, including transition coaching, advanced nurse practitioner participation, the use of a guided care nurse, Boston University's Project RED and the Society of Hospital Medicine's Project Boost.

Join CMSA in Supporting the National Nurse Act of 2011

Take Action: National Nurse Act of 2011 In solidarity with over 95 nurse-affiliated entities across the nation, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) strongly supports H.R.3679.IH, or the National Nurse Act of 2011.

The National Nurse Act of 2011 proposes an amendment to the Public Health Service Act for the purpose of establishing a National Nurse for Public Health. If the Act is passed, the current Chief Nurse Officer (CNO) of the Public Health Service will become the National Nurse for Public Health, promoting the former CNO position to a rank and grade equivalent to that of the Deputy Surgeon General.

Under this Bill, the National Nurse for Public Health will be responsible for identifying and coordinating public health priorities within the Office of the Surgeon General. The National Nurse will be responsible for bringing initiatives such as Healthy People 2020 to the attention of communities, organizations, and the public as a whole. As a leader in the Public Health Service division, the National Nurse will serve as a guiding force to advance the nursing profession in areas including research, recruitment, and career development.

One of the ways you can help to make the National Nurse become a reality is to contact your legislators and ask for their support to help pass H.R.3679.IH. Please remember, the National Nurse Act is non-partisan.

New England Journal of Medicine Article Shows Savings Through Enhanced Case Management

A study from Health Dialog appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine today, uses a randomized controlled trial to definitively show the savings delivered by an enhanced care management program.

HHS Releases Quality-Improvement Strategy

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released the National Strategy for Quality Improvement in Health Care (National Quality Strategy). The strategy was called for under the Affordable Care Act and is the first effort to create national aims and priorities to guide local, state, and national efforts to improve the quality of health care in the United States.

The National Quality Strategy will promote quality health care in which the needs of patients, families, and communities guide the actions of all those who deliver and pay for care. It will incorporate the evidence-based results of the latest research and scientific advances in clinical medicine, public health, and health care delivery and will foster a delivery system that works better for clinicians and provider organizations—reducing their administrative burdens and helping them collaborate to improve care.
