The rate of bariatric surgery is increasing sharply, and surgery is now recognized as the most effective treatment for severe persistent obesity. Case managers are likely to be asked for information on surgical treatment of severe obesity. AAPPO has developed an Issue Brief series that examines the criteria for bariatric surgery, as well as programs and policies that need to be in place to assure good outcomes. The series of four issue briefs address the expected impact of bariatric surgery, patient engagement strategies, benefit design strategies and the need for multidisciplinary care.
