As healthcare providers and their payers increasingly insist on evidence-based sources to justify treatment and reimbursement decisions, case managers cannot afford to dismiss the evidence-based movement. Indeed, the professional identity of case management is inextricably tied to evidence-based practices, as case managers are depended upon for recommending care plans that combine clinical effectiveness with acceptable cost.
This panel presentation will provide a contemporary overview of evidence-based practice, and discuss its integration and relevance within the practice of case management. The opening presentation will lay the foundation for evidence-based practice as essential for delivering quality, safe, and cost-effective care. Various types of evidence-based practices will be described, and their application to case management explored. The second presentation will show how case managers can access and integrate evidence-based practices directly into their case management services and plans. The third presentation will continue this skill-oriented approach and focus on working with third-party payors.
The panel will conclude by noting continuing challenges and controversies involving evidence-based practice. Critics of evidence-based practice complain that what passes as evidence in research is often questionable; that an emphasis on evidence-based practice dilutes the health professional’s clinical imagination and ability to respond to novel cases; and that organizational barriers to evidence-based practice are common. |
