Title: The Unsung Hero: The Caregiver
 Date: Tuesday, June 8, 2010
 Time: 02:45 PM - 05:15 PM
 Type: KEYNOTE
 Level: INTERMEDIATE
 Track: -
 Sponsor(s): -
 Speaker(s): Lee Woodruff

Listen as Lee Woodruff shares her story with us on the difficulties her family faced after learning her husband, Bob (a co-anchor for ABC’s World News Tonight) had been critically injured from war. Lee will relate the intense care management it took for Bob to be rehabilitated during his lengthy, ongoing recovery; and the courage she and her children had to display every day to “keep the flame of hope alive.”

Since September 11, 2001, more than 1.65 million U.S. service members have been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. More than 35,000 service members have been physically wounded; an estimated 320,000 have sustained traumatic brain injuries; and more than 300,000 others have psychological wounds.

Lee and Bob continue to build a movement to empower communities nationwide to take action to successfully reintegrate our nation’s injured heroes – especially those who have sustained the hidden injuries of war – back into their communities. Bob Woodruff has returned to work as a TV journalist and newscaster; and serves as a constant reminder to all patients with traumatic brain injuries, that miracles do happen---and the embers of life can ignite once again!”

Objectives:
  1. Discuss what the term “caregiver” means.
  2. Describe Traumatic Brain Injury and its effects, not only for the patient, but also the caregiver.
  3. Give example of how caregivers should take care of, not only the patient, but themselves.
