The diabetic foot is a “step-child” in the medical community. Specialty foot programs and would clinics in the US and Europe has been shown to reduce the incidence of amputations and hospitalizations by more than 50%. Even though preventative care has been shown to be effective, it is often not implemented. Usually there is an informal, ad hoc team of health care professionals that organizes the care of diabetic foot wounds, infections, amputations, rehabilitation and preventative care. In many cases treatment is not based on medical evidence.
