Case managers who manage breast cancer patients have diverse and often difficult roles, including women's health advocate, resource manager, medication management specialist, supportive care cheerleader and medical care coordinator.
Among the most complex and ever-expanding tasks is that of medication management, which includes patient education, monitoring utility and efficacy of treatment interventions, and managing side effects of therapy in the cancer treatment paradigm. Armed with often minimal advanced knowledge of chemotherapy and other complex medications, effective case managers must assimilate the diverse utility of targeted therapy in breast cancer treatment, and effectively manage the central role of treatment regimens in the breast cancer patient's outcomes.
This symposium will proactively mentor case managers to increase their knowledge and competence in contemporary treatment of patients with breast cancer. It will also provide case managers with the newest care coordination strategies that can be applied in medication management, with a focus on adherence, management of side effects and ongoing patient education.
Objectives:
- Compare and contrast emerging and currently available targeted therapies for breast cancer
- Differentiate the appropriate role of targeted therapies in the breast cancer treatment paradigm
- Evaluate the role of the case manager in disease management of the breast cancer patient, with a focus on adherence, adverse effects, and coordination of care
