Case managers and social workers have significant insight into the physical and mental status of their disabled patients who legitimately qualify for SSDI benefits. Understanding the sequential review process used by SSA in evaluating medical severity and disability can alleviate redundant and duplicative requests for additional documentation. Helping patients access timely financial and healthcare benefits decreases the burden of care related to the disabled uninsured population.

This presentation will discuss the review process used by the Social Security Administration(SSA) in evaluating medical records submitted on behalf of an individual seeking Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Presentation material will review regulatory processes followed for evaluation of medical records from treating medical source vs. determinations being made from non-treating, non-examining physicians. Case studies will be shared that demonstrated coordination of efforts and opinion of the administration.

Objectives:
  1. Recite eligibility criteria and benefits of receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
  2. Associate Disability Determination Services (DDS) decision-making with appeals process.
  3. Examine medical records submitted by treating medical source vs. non-treating source.
