A challenge faced by Health Educators and Case Managers in a Managed Care Organization is how to educate a large, diverse member population devoid of well-developed health literacy skills. As our member population’s dependence on web-based health information increases, it is crucial that those members with low health literacy are accommodated. Using the Consumer Information Processing (CIP) Model, we at Neighborhood Health Plan have developed: 1) “Your Health,” an accessible, practical, health information website; 2) Thumbs Up for Healthy Food Choices and Thumbs Up for Hypertension Control, bilingual health promotion booklets that primarily use pictures and graphics to deliver health information; and 3) Asthma print materials that use pictures to illustrate the key components of asthma self-management.

Objectives:
  1. Describe ways in which health literacy affects Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) members’ ability to manage chronic disease management.
  2. Identify the two central assumptions of the Consumer Information Processing (CIP) Model.
  3. Explain how NHP’s print materials and online resources adhere to the assumptions of the CIP Model.
  4. Describe how NHP’s print materials and online resources accommodate members with low health literacy skills.
